The area was covered in so much blood and her body so mutilated that she was not instantly recognisable by her heart-broken family when they found her. Officers had to rely on Post Mortem results to confirm her identity.

(...)

_JODI KILLED BY PERVERT; Police say tragic girl confronted sexual deviant as she walked through woods_

SCHOOLGIRL Jodi Jones disturbed her killer committing a sex act in the woods, police believe.

Senior detectives think the murderer was caught in a compromising position by the teenager as she walked to meet her boyfriend.

He then flew into a rage and launched the frenzied knife attack which killed 14- year-old Jodi.

The murder team believe there is a growing body of evidence to suggest she interrupted a flasher, peeping tom or someone else committing a sex act.

It is now their strongest line of inquiry.

(...)

"Jodi was not sexually attacked but the team are working on the theory the killer is a sexual deviant or was committing a sex act.

"It may or may not have been someone she knew but we believe he was on his own.

"He may have been disturbed by Jodi's arrival or her reaction and attacked her. He just flipped.

"We are also interested in the fact the killer appears to be somebody who habitually carries a knife."

Jodi's partially clothed and mutilated body was discovered by her boyfriend Luke and a family friend.

Detectives initially discounted a sexual motive as there was no evidence of an indecent attack on Jodi. Now they believe the killer was "sexually embarrassed" before he started the attack on the Roman Dyke pathway between Jodi's home in Easthouses and Luke's home in Newbattle, near Dalkeith.

Details about the condition of her mutilated body also point towards the killer being disturbed.

Detectives are still convinced Jodi's killer is local.

_JODI COPS STUDY MANSON DVD; Officers say killer may have watched film_

THIS video nasty by shock rocker Marilyn Manson is being scrutinised by detectives hunting the killer of teenager Jodi Jones.

The film - called Doppelherz - shows the Goth star taking a girl bound to another girl into the woods in darkness.

Police yesterday confirmed the images could hold vital clues as they hunt the 14- year-old's murderer.

One officer said: "We think this film may have special significance and it is being looked at.

"There is a belief that Jodi's killer may have watched it."

The film shows the partly naked girls in distress struggling to free themselves before Manson and a henchman tie bags over their heads.

The screen fades to black before their lifeless-looking bodies are dragged away.

The pounding soundtrack features Manson singing: "I'm a canvas that bleeds and I'm painted with fingers.

"Kill me, kill everyone. You can let them all die. The only thing in this world that does not die is money."

The film is seen as one of the most significant lines of inquiry for police investigating Jodi and her friends' enthusiasm for Goth music.

Police believe the video may have special relevance to her killer and the way Jodi died near her home in Easthouses, Midlothian.

The DVD film was released in a special format with Manson's CD, The Golden Age of Grotesque, just weeks before her death on June 30.

Meanwhile, the Sunday Mail can reveal a rapist from Midlothian was released from prison less than two months before Jodi's murder.

Police had intelligence that the sex offender had made a habit of camping overnight in the woods close to the path in Dalkeith where Jodi's body was found.

The man has been interviewed and is not thought to be a suspect.
